GP and Practice Nurse conversations to prompt Bowel Screening in Priority Populations

General Practices are invited to take part in the NBSP May Primary Care Promotion to increase bowel screening participation among under-screened groups and improve patient outcomes.

Bowel screening helps detect cancer early, when it can often be successfully treated. The May campaigns in 2023 and 2024 were highly successful, increasing kit requests among under-screened groups. This year’s promotion aims to build on that success and drive even greater participation.

The purpose of this project is to evaluate the effectiveness of the NBSP primary care campaign.  Data can demonstrate why there is a need for this intervention.  By focusing on increasing the participation of Māori and Pacific groups, the project is expected to illustrate an improvement in equity of participation in the NBSP.

As part of the NBSP primary care campaign there is the opportunity to answer these two questions:

  1. Does a campaign focusing on primary care increase FIT kit requests for NBSP Māori and Pacific groups?
  2. Does a campaign focusing on primary care increase participation for Māori and Pacific groups?

What do we want clinicians to do?
  • Have a conversation with priority group patients who have not completed bowel screening.
  • Use the desk top trifold to guide the conversation.

Opportunistic conversations:
  • GPs and practice nurses will be encouraged to initiate discussions about bowel screening during consultations to support informed decision-making.
